In the Malecon, just around the corner on Calle Ulloa (the first street encountered after entering the Malecón) is a unique little seashell art emporium called Made in Puerto Peñasco. It occupies a small space at the rear of a compact step-up patio area flanked by the Scooby Shack hot dog and curio stand and next door to Viva México, a local favorite taco eatery.
With 17 of the 20 available exhibit spaces sold for the first event and a steady stream of customers and visitors from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM last Saturday, the inaugural Mermaid’s Marketplace held in Rocky Point’s Shrimp Park can be considered nothing short of a success.
The contest ended in a flurry at midnight last night (Wednesday October 10, 2012) with several last minute entries arriving before the deadline. About two hundred guests graced the restaurant venue at the Sonoran Sky Condominium Resort in Puerto Peñasco Saturday nightlending their support to raise funds for DIF; the city sponsored family assistance charity organization that has helped needy children and adults of this port city for 36 years.

Before he was 20 years old, Curly had played with local bands throughout Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma until he was discovered by an Asylum Records-signed rock band newly forming by the name of Jo Jo Gunne. Two of the members had just come over from the recently dissolved rock band Spirit. From their eponymous debut album, a #10 hit in England, “Run, Run, Run” was spawned. That record peaked #27 in the U.S. Jo Jo Gunne toured the U.S. and Europe several times and released three more albums before breaking up in 1974.
To truly appreciate this event is to understand that the word “Taste” in this moniker is used in its full nuance from the word “Sabor” in Spanish which refers to much more than just the taste of food. It idiomatically encompasses all that makes a place, a thing, or an atmosphere endemically and invitingly pleasing to ones senses, like its color, its culture, its art, its people, its music, its dance, as well as its traditional foods and drinks.

It all starts at 11:00 A.M. and runs until 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Plaza del Camarón (Shrimp Plaza) located on Benito Juarez across Fremont Street from City Hall.
