Kory Bonini Gets Surprise Birthday Party by Grateful Friends

Cory B-Day Party 059Kory has worked miracles as a catalyst in this community, bringing together those in need with those who can provide what is needed.  It is simply amazing how effortless she makes it seem to do the near impossible; getting a project put together with just the right combination of motivated and qualified “doers”. Cory B-Day Party 017

Over 20 charitable community citizens, mostly expats who are involved in helping the local needy, showed up at Capone’s last Tuesday as a birthday surprise for Kory. Her social graces shined like beacons of goodness as she graciously, even humbly accepted the gratitude of people she’s helped, like Karen and Mark Higgins of Living Stones Ministry and Ron and Carol Okinga who volunteer at the Good Samaritan Church of God, 2 Fish Ministries and Living Stones Ministry plus a number of other volunteers, missionaries and just plain Cory B-Day Party 069 good people like friend and volunteer, María Romero who drove in from her company office, Gila Bend Registration and Title, just for the party and returned later that night.

Many gifts, Mariachis, and a gorgeous cake (from which Kory took a traditional “mordida” with a helpful shove from her husband, Cory B-Day Party 043 Demetrio) were topped off with an impromptu performance by singer and guitarist, Joaquín DSC_0097 Fragozo. Kory is a native of Douglas, Arizona and one of 10 siblings. She worked as a counselor with the Arizona Department of Corrections until four years before she was eligible for her 20-year retirement. If her chosen career doesn’t give you enough insight as to the caring person Kory is, read on:

Her decision to retire early was not one she had to mull over. She chose to be with her Mother in Puerto Peñasco for the last few years of her life.  After all, her Mom had taken care of her growing up and this was Kory’s chance to care for her during her years of waning health. Her Mom passed away in 2001.

DSC_0083 Kory credits her Mother’s “profound wisdom” for her own philosophy, “Live simply, Love generously.” It takes only moments when you meet her to realize she is the manifestation of that altruistic philosophy. Her Mother taught Kory not to fear life, to hold on to it, to weather the storms with the strength of faith and be the very best she can be. The way she seems to learn from every experience proves that these lessons have become an integral part of her life as well.

Her Mother was always concerned if Kory was going to get married. Kory constantly reassured her that one day a cowboy would come “to my door on a beautiful horse and just whisk me away.”

As it turned out, her “cowboy” did arrive—in the form of Italian national motorcycle racing champion, Demetrio Bonino who had been living in Caborca since 1996; the “horse” he used to whisk Kory away was a Jeep Cherokee. They were married in Wickenburg and have been together for 12 years.

Demetrio is the classic Italian gentleman with a constant and kind smile, great sense of humor and seems to relish the treasure that is Kory’s passion for helping people and her keen sense of finding the good in humanity.

From Demetrio Kory has adapted to the iconic Italian philosophy “Vive la dolce vita.” Live the sweet life!
